Impact - We believe that reducing our impact on the planet is not only the right thing to do, it's also good for business. We're working to achieve specific goals. When we use fewer resources, we usually save money. Savings we can pass on to families who buy our cereals. And that's what we call "a better way".
Materials - Whenever possible, we use 100% recycled paperboard for our cardboard boxes and shipping containers.
Water - We've officially declared a War On Water. Since 1997, we've reduced the amount of water used to make a pound of cereal by 41%. And 95% of our solid waste is diverted from landfills.
Solid Waste - overall goals include reduction of solid waste created during production by 10% and diversion of 95% of solid waste from landfills by 2016.
Energy and Greenhouse Gas Emissions - In 2011, our Campbell Mill in Northfield received the Industrial Environmental Achievement Award in recognition of practices of waste minimization, pollution prevention, and environmental stewardship.
We've partnered with TerraCycle since 2009, rewarding school groups and non-profits for recycling their empty cereal bags by sending them to TerraCycle. TerraCycle finds partners who repurpose used bags as well as outdated packaging material we send from our production facilities. Our TerraCycle partnership is the best end-of-life solution we've found for plastic packaging.
In 2009, we started thinking about all the resources that go in to producing the 2.3 billion cereal boxes sold every year in the U.S. When each box has a plastic bag inside, we wondered why the cereal category needed so much excess packaging. Thus, the Bag The Box campaign was launched. We hope we can change people's minds about cereal packaging. The more families who bag the box, the better off we'll all be.
